Nerd Flag

August 25, 2008

Okay, I’m going to admit it. I’ve been dreading this whole blog thing for a full week now. While my courageous peers posted away last week, I sat on the sidelines, coasting on their brilliance and bravery…feigning busyness to avoid putting myself out there. The idea of posting something for others to read; without editing, proofing, writing and rewriting was (and still is) scary to me.

It’s the same reason I gave up writing diary writing in the 5th grade. It became too time consuming. I’d spend hours crafting the perfect sentences, searching for the perfect adjectives and verbs to explain my absolute, total and complete love for Jeff, the most perfect boy in the world. And in the end, when I couldn’t share my beautifully crafted essay with anyone because Jeff was cool, and I was uncool, I was disappointed.

I felt the same type of torn when it comes to blogging. Can I keep up with the blog, without over thinking it? Do I have the guts to risk looking uncool in sharing a half formed thought, or a silly observation?

At the inspiration of my fellow tangelorians, I’ve embraced the blog. And now I think I’m in love. It’s like thinking out loud. It’s vulnerability at its best. It’s throwing something out there, sometimes half baked, for the world to comment on. It really is taking a leap. But the rawness of it is what makes it so great. Okay, maybe the post isn’t brilliant. Maybe it isn’t well written. But if it was worth writing, there is some element of realness to it that gives it value.

It’s in sharing thoughts with someone that it becomes real. Otherwise, it’s just words on a page or thoughts in your head. What is the point of writing, if not to share? What is the point of even thinking if not to share?

One of my favorite quotes of all time is from the movie Almost Famous. I think it sums of the way I have feel about my first blogging attempts: The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.

I feel like blogging is where you can fly your nerd flag. And people will appreciate it for what it is…at the least, REAL. At the best, INSPIRATION for another thought.

Go all ya’ll! ‘Bout time someone besides Crystal got loud (you know I love you for it C). I don’t have anything particularly inspiring to say just now, but maybe after watching the DNC tonight, something will come up. Stay tuned.

Go Kimtastic! It is totally taking a leap. What’s really interesting is how publishing an opinion or thought helps develop and shape the opinion or thought.

I like to think of it as a geek flag or sexy-people flag … but it’s the same territory.

And I’m glad you’re getting loud as Oertli puts it. You’ve got something to say.
