The Bloggess vs. William Shatner Twitter Showdown

August 17, 2009

Just had to share this fascinating mommy blogger. Warning, she might be crazy. But she’s got a war going with William Shatner that is absolutely hysterical and shows the power of mommy bloggers … and that the ones who are a little bent seem to draw readers in like 2.0 soap operas.

Long story short she has a twitter account @TheBloggess, a mommy blog at The Houston Chronicle and her own blog The Bloggess. Her account of the feud seems accurate from some quick sleuthing.

Long story short: I invited William Shatner to dinner so he could save my marriage, he didn’t respond, I went to send him a link about how much I love him, WILLIAM SHATNER BLOCKED ME, Gawker called me an interesting psycho, MSNBC covered the feud, thousands of people made me laugh hysterically as they rallied around the completely ludicrous cause of getting William Shatner to unblock me on twitter.

The Twitter meme #unblockthebloggess and the associated movement support ribbon still seems to have some support out there, marketed by the high traffic of some dedicated tweeters. The attack on @WilliamShatner just for the fun of it — or, more to the point, for not having a sense of humor about her tweets — is truly fascinating. This shows the power of mommy bloggers, writers with a wicked sense of humor and Twitter memes all in one masterstroke. Or, as the MSNBC piece pointed out, it shows that some “pointless babble” can be hilarious.

Enjoy. This one is pure fun.

I so adore this. I think this is the first thing I’ve read all month that used the phrase “the power of mommybloggers” that I *wasn’t* totally offended by. I would totally fist bump you right now if you were here.

Also, one day William Shatner and I are going to laugh about this. Or he’ll sneak into my house and strangle me. One of those two things.

I’m so glad you liked it. And even happier not to offend. Fist bump right back atcha.

Awesome. You know you’ve got a powerful story when you have your own twitter meme. I am, however, disappointed that William Shatner doesn’t have a better sense of humor. Maybe he thought she came on a little to strong, but this seems like the kind of thing Bill would be down with.

Thanks for covering the battle! We need support so send your friends, family, K-Mart check-out clerk, coworkers and that weird kid from down the street to join #unblockthebloggess. You are awesome. Keep up the good work!

Wow, talk about understatement and complete fabrication! I believe that this is the actual chronology of what psycho-mommy posted on Twitter to Shatner was:

“Okay, don’t ask why but I need to get William Shatner to come
    to my house asap. “

“Seriously, does anyone know him? My marriage is in peril.“

“Dear @ WilliamShatner: I need you to come to my house to save my
    marriage. No sex involved.”

“Unless you *want* to have sex. Which is totally fine.”

“But not with me though because I’m married. Please bring your own

“Oh my God, what am I saying? I am the worst hostess ever. I will
totally provide the hooker if you just come to dinner.”

“I need to know your preferences though or else I’ll just default
    to hot Asian cheerleader.”

“Fuck. Dear @WilliamShatner. Please ignore my last several
tweets. I’m a little drunk. And dangerously close to paying too much
    for travel.”

“Please come to my house and save me from myself.”

“There may or may not be hookers here.”

    “Please give me a sign.”

And I believe the “sign” was given: he blocked her.

Shame on the alleged Moomy journalist for misrepresenting the facts but then again this is what this movement by 100+ (not thousands) is all about; pretending that a great wrong has been done here.

I expect that psycho-mommy will now direct her minions to come here and denounce this reply by posting inane commentary on Shatner.

Actually, TheBloggess has directed nothing. This movement was created by her fans and I’m the one that started the Shat bashing, and I’m not a mommy blogger. And, you’re missing the point. We are FANS of Shatner. This can only help him in the end, but it’s nastiness and SINCERE attacks like yours that make things ugly. You should try getting a sense of humor, they’re very popular these days.

  6. August 18, 2009 10:15 am

Yeah, celebrities should definitely have more of a sense of humor about stalkers. They’re just no fun at all, are they?

  7. August 18, 2009 10:31 am

Even my husband who thinks Twitter is “retarded” (his word not mine DON’T HATE ME!) asks for the best @WilliamShatner’s of the day.

I just flat love the insanity that is @TheBloggess. Her mind is a terrible thing to block.

  8. August 18, 2009 10:31 am

Oh, Jenny’s great. She’s got a killer sense of humor. Anyone with half a brain can see that.

Shatner? Dude, get a sense of humor! (You too, “Truth talker”. We’ll all be laughing at you behind your back now. ‘Cause that’s how we roll.)

  9. August 18, 2009 11:13 am

Truthstalker: So you’re saying that William Shatner’s blocking me actually was the sign I was asking for and that he really is coming to my house for dinner? Because that seems like a pretty big leap in logic but one I’m willing to take.

Let’s try again: William Shatner: I need another sign from you because the last one confused all of us. If you are coming to my house for dinner tonight please continue to block me. If you require a vegetarian meal please send me a restraining order. If you are allergic to pugs please just email me that and we can meet at Red Lobster instead because Barnaby-Jones-Pickles hates staying at a kennel.

What was the last thing you posted to William Shatner before you were blocked? Wasn’t it “give me a sign”?

So the fact you were blocked and Twitter presents things in reverse chronological order – wouldn’t that be the answer?

Also are you ashamed of what you said that you needed to try to misrepresent what was actually said in order to fast track yourself to Martyrdom?

Have you actually sent Shatner a note to apologize? Maybe if you said – you know, it was just a joke and I do admire you and I’m sorry if I offended you – he’d actually unblock you.

Do you think the constant harassing by the ‘minions’ really helps your cause? Maybe it gives you more fame or infamy but it probably isn’t helping.

      • August 18, 2009 12:14 pm

Truthtalker, dude, lighten up. You make it sound as if Jenny was hanging around Shatner’s house. It’s TWITTER, for goodness sake.

You and Shatner are the only ones taking any of this seriously.

      • August 18, 2009 10:16 pm

Hey, are you @PaulCamuso, who tweeted me in defense of @WilliamShatner? I’m thinking you must be, because it’s hard to believe that there are two totally clueless and humorless fans of the Shat on twitter. I could be wrong.

  10. August 18, 2009 12:47 pm

Truth Talker : If you got Jenny’s sense of humor at all you would realize that she doesn’t really care if William Shatner has blocked her or not (at least I don’t think she does) It is just another thing to make a joke out of which is why I LOVE her and find her so damn funny. EVERYTHING is a joke and nothing is off limits.

As Tracy Lynn said, “It’s TWITTER, for goodness sake.” Of course we don’t condone celebrity stalking. But we do appreciate really funny doings.

All of us @The_Lair are so excited to host a portion of this debate in our comments section. Thanks so much for stopping by. Alex and I got cookies for everyone at Culinaria. We’ll tweet ’em atcha.

Truth Talker – Times are tough, and TheBloggess and her army–led by the talented Mayopie–offer some of us the giggles we need to get through the day. It’s a joke, dude, and frankly I think Shatner can use the publicity. If you don’t get it, that is your loss.

I love The Bloggess and her raging insanity. OMG, the entries about going to blogging conferences and being so freaked by social phobias that she hid in her hotel room/suitcase/etc.? Priceless.

Somehow, though, when I share a particularly funny entry with someone, it’s misunderstand about 50% of the time. Maybe she’s like a great scotch; you just have to develop an appreciation for the many nuances that make up the whole.
