Mary Pat posted a tweet about the fun new Mad Men promotion hyping the new season. It’s a website called MadMenYourself. I follow MPizzle on Twitter so I saw her new avatar and was all “I want one.” Meanwhile, Alex made one. But it didn’t look like him. While he was fixing matters, I made an AWESOME avatar of myself and he helped me put it on Twitter. Then we had to have one of Kim for the gallery. And one of Frank a.k.a. Bobby. Anyway, this Mad Men piece of branded entertainment is a terrific example of how to involve consumers in your brand narrative, encourage sharing by incorporating personalization and a reminder of the power of social media to raise awareness. We’re already seeing these pop up like those Obamacons on Twitter and Facebook. At least in ad friendship circles. Which is good for a show about, um, advertising.

We’ve got narratives for each scene. Kim is thinking about sin in the SoHo Grand. Alex is in a creative presentation. Frank a.k.a. Bobby is meeting his wife for a picnic after work. Mary Pat is about to hit on Don Draper. And I am being mean to Peggy.

I’m deeply digging this new toy. I remember when the “Muppet yourself” site was taken down after they realized they couldn’t meet the demand for the dolls. Very silly of them to not understand that people just like noodling around with avatar systems.
