Employee Happiness Kit

March 6, 2009

I got a funny e-mail from Stacy that surely must be making its way around the Internet.  The e-mail was titled Employee Happiness Kit.

Due to these difficult economic times and otherwise depressing state of the world today, all personnel will now be required to at least look happy while working. Company-approved supplies will be provided to each employee at little or no cost. Here is the new low-cost, company-approved solution to cope with multiple priorities and assignments! Each employee will be supplied 2 paper clips and rubber bands. (See Figure 1.) Assemble items as shown in Figure 2. Apply as shown in Figure 3. This new happiness equipment will help you to reach the end of a productive work day with a smile on your face! Have a nice day … Senior Management.

Methinks office humor is a leading indicator of the state of the zeitgeist. Americans are bummed. The economy hasn’t just made it tough at home; it’s made things more stressful at work. This joke is funny because it taps into how many office workers are feeling. Stressed by workload and pressured to look happy because you still have a job. In true American fashion, people find humor in the situation.

{Confidential to the dude in the soul-killing cube in Figure 3:  If you’re desperately trying to live this down and wish this photo would disappear from the internet, drop us a line and we’ll stop giggling at this picture of you. We’re decent like that here at Tangelos. But know we’re laughing with you, not at you.}
