A Rush at Denny’s

February 16, 2009

Remember the Denny’s ad during the SuperBowl?

dennysA free Grand Slam breakfast to everyone who came in from 8am-2pm on Tuesday after the game…mmmmm.  They also took out a full page ad in Monday’s USA today and were featured on The Today Show that morning.

After a little discussion in The Lair, our curiousity was piqued, so I decided to stop by on the way to work during the hours of the offer and check out the response (see pics below).  Apparently, there were solid two hour waits across the country as 2 million customers walked through the doors (about 5 times the normal volume of Grand Slams were served up).   Despite the delays, everyone seemed in a pretty good mood – just happy to be getting something for free.  The servers were clammoring for me to take more pictures of them (a stark contrast to when Alex and I were escorted out of Sears a few months back for our covert reconnaissance on batteries).  They even gave me a raincheck for the Grand Slam!dennys-line

Additional results – inclusion in Google’s top ten searches for the day, as well as #1 placement on Twitter’s trending topics.  All in all, it is estimated that Denny’s garnered nearly $50 million in media coverage and PR as a result of their $3-5 mil Superbowl promotion investment.  Not bad…although I think they may have failed to include the cost of a few Grand Slams.

Stay tuned for their World Series promotion….

Awesome buzz. Terrific offer. It was interesting seeing people getting all excited about two strips of bacon, two links, two eggs and two pancakes. I wonder if they’ll go back for a second Grand Slam after the mother of all sampling events. Thanks for hitting the streets to report the story, with art even.
