Guns N’ Roses N’ Lawyers

December 2, 2008

As part of a marketing promotion, Dr. Pepper recently promised to give every American a free can of soda. The only condition was that legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses release their 17 years in the making, groundbreaking new album, “Chinese Democracy,” in 2008.

Well, the album came out last week, and Dr. Pepper honored its promise by letting consumers download a coupon for a free soda from their website, which was up for 48 hours. As fate would have it, the site crashed from a traffic overload. Jaded consumers began blaming the band as the blogosphere was flooded with accusations of wrong doing on the part of Guns N’ Roses and on lead singer Axl Rose.

The band has subsequently sued Dr. Pepper over the bad PR. Meanwhile, “Chinese Democracy” has opened to mediocre reviews, losing the #1 spot on the charts to the Killers. Apparently, Axl Rose has been AWOL for some time and did not participate in any promotion leading up to the release.

Seems to me Guns N’ Roses doesn’t have their shit together and should be thanking Dr. Pepper for the free publicity. But hey, anyone would be a little cranky after 17 years in the studio making a crappy album.axl

What happened to Axl? That hair. That mug.
He used to have a good thing going.

And, honestly, the only reason why I listed to their Chinese whatever single was because of the Dr. Pepper controversy. It’s gotten them more air play than they probably deserve.

He should have just left well enough alone and done a nostalgia tour behind Appetite for Destruction. That album still rocks. But y’all know I listen in a time warp.
