Travel Tips

September 5, 2008

Just got home from a business trip and have to share three new business travel insights.

1) Delta may be worth another look for business trips. This is the second time I’ve flown them in a month and both experiences were fabulous. On time departure, doable connections, early arrival, worthy in flight magazine, nice peanuts, friendly people. Even the babies were better behaved on Delta … cute, precocious, no tears. Hard to give up miles when you’ve got elite status on another airline, but there’s nothing like actually getting home (25 minutes early) on a Friday night.

2) Amtrak high speed rail up and down the east coast beats flying. It really does.

3) Get a car service. Today Stacy and I had the Cab Ride from Hell. No air conditioning. Ripped seats. And a dispatcher who was hacked off because we were apparently the wrong fare for the cab. He told the cabbie to turn around, take us back and pick up the right fare. Not kidding. But wait, there’s more. This hard core fight went on for 5 loud minutes over the radio as we hurtled down the highway. We asked them to deal with it when we were at the airport. {Actually, Stacy got on the radio and cussed the dispatcher out. It was a sight to behold.} The fight moved from the radio to cell phones. And we could hear one side of the loud anxiety-inducing exchange. Then the driver, frazzled, TURNED AROUND to talk to us for what felt like two minutes while fighting with the dispatcher on his cell, and us saying “watch the road!” as he swerved. Then we called to complain and ask them to leave the guy alone for the love of all that’s holy. Then the dispatcher gets on the radio for round 2 of the fight, suggesting that the cabbie had intimidated us. We weighed the desperate hope of catching an earlier flight with the fear of staying in that cab. It being Friday, we stayed the course, praying and arriving safely. We gave the disobedient cabbie a big tip. And vowed to order a car next time. A nice cushy towncar with no drama …

And Delta has a non-stop from NYC to St. Louis – United doesn’t.

US Air has those funky headrests that are too darn low for a tall peron and make the entire flight uncomfortable. Ugh!

Taxi cab confessions are the best. Particularly when you have witnesses to the antics.
I’m glad you two survived the affair.

Ha ha ha ha ha. That’s all I got. And I want to hear about this in person, I beg of you.
